Troop Glossary

Common Terms:

Term
Description
COH
Court Of Honor; the bi-yearly awards ceremony. Rank Advancements, Merit Badges, and other awards are given at these meetings.
First Class
The basis rank; this determines many things including position eligibility requirements. When a scout earns this rank, he gets an embroidered kneckercief.
Merit Badge
One of one-hundred-twenty badges that can be earned by a scout. This shows that the scout has learned/studied a certain skill or activity.
Patrol
A group of scouts that are a sub-division of a troop; Troop 831 has three: the Shining Eagles, the Cougars, and the Ravens (Senior Patrol)
PLC
Patrol Leaders Council Meeting; the monthly meeting where the events of the next 90 days worth of activities are discussed and planned.

Regular Meeting
A meeting taking place at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at 6:30 PM. Progam is to include: a lesson/skill ("program"), a game, and a Patrol meeting

A Girl Scout camp in West Virginia where the troop has an annual "Ski Weekend"
Senior Patrol
the group of senior scouts, including the SPL, ASPL, and sometimes the Quartermaster(s)

Positions of Responsibility

Description/Requirements
SPL
(Alexander Popichak)
Senior Patrol Leader; He is responsible for the troop’s overall operation. With guidance from the Scoutmaster, he takes charge of troop meetings, of the patrol leaders’ council, and of all troop activities, and he does everything he can to help each patrol be successful. He works alongside the ASPL, Patrol Leaders, and the troop members to make the troop go.

ASPL

Assistant Senior Patrol Leader; The assistant senior patrol leader works closely with the senior patrol leader to help the troop move forward and serves as acting senior patrol leader when the senior patrol leader is absent. Among his specific duties, the assistant senior patrol leader trains and provides direction to the troop quartermaster, scribe, historian, librarian, instructors, and Order of the Arrow representative.

Patrol Leader

He represents the patrol at all patrol leaders’ council meetings and the annual program planning conference and keeps patrol members informed of decisions made. He plays a key role in planning, leading, and evaluating patrol meetings and activities and prepares the patrol to participate in all troop activities. The patrol leader learns about the abilities of other patrol members and full involves them in patrol and troop activities by assigning them specific tasks and responsibilities.

Asstant Patrol Leader
He works alongside the Patrol Leader in making decisions for the patrol. He acts on behalf of the patrol leader when the he is absent.

Scribe
He works to bring information to the troop on things, and documents troop events and attendance. He works alongside the webmaster, the historian, and the junior leaders.
REQ: Our Troop Asks you have a somewhat good knowledge of the English Language.
Historian
He gathers pictures and facts about past troop activities and keeps them in a historical file or scrapbook. Takes care of troop trophies, ribbons, and souvenirs of troop activities. Keeps information about former members of the troop.
Den Chief
The den chief works with the Cub Scouts, Webelos Scouts, and den leaders in the Cub Scout pack.
Librarian
The librarian takes care of the troop library. Sets up and takes care of a troop library, keeps records of books, pamphlets, and videos owned by the troop. Adds new or replacement items as needed Keeps a system for checking items in and out
Follows up on late returns
Chaplain's Aide
The chaplain's aide works with the troop chaplain to meet the religious needs of Scouts in the troop.  He also works to promote the religious emblems program.
Quartermaster
The quartermaster keeps track of troop equipment and sees that it is in good working order.
